The Atlantic Affairs
The New Criterion Foundation was established in 2005 by a group of students from the Department of War
Studies, King’s College London. It exists to study and examine a new wave of ideological trends emerging
worldwide and gaining strength in the aftermath of 9/11. These ideological trends are marked by increasing
forging together of Islamists and Left forces, thereby undermining the liberal ideal of democracy, free press,
individual initiative and rule of law.

The Foundation stands to debunk emerging ideologies and threats to pluralism and Western democracies, the
West defined as a non-geographic continent following in the footprints of Reformation, Renaissance, Industrial
Revolution and the American Founding.  A non-geographic West means that Australia, New Zealand, Japan and
increasingly now India are integral parts of the West. We intend to intervene in public situations in which public
sentiments run counter to public interests.

The New Criterion Foundation, through a series of research programmes to be published at its website www.
atlanticaffairs.org, will work to defend co-existence and rationality, thereby identifying emerging threats to
democracies and working against them. We have identified populism, Islamism, multiculturalism (as
distinguished from pluralism), ideologies, totalitarianism, and the like as priorities on our research programmes.
In order to fulfil these objectives, we seek applications for the following unpaid positions from candidates whose
minds engage on these subjects:

Research Fellow – Biographies
The Fellow will be required to research and write on public individuals whose statements and actions are
designed to undermine the democratic argument. You will be expected to select names of four writers,
politicians, journalists or activists and come out with 3000-word biographical sketch each over a period of 12
months.

Research Fellow – Regimes
The Fellow will be required to research and write on government leaders whose tenure as President, Prime
Minister or ruler of a country extends more than two terms or more than eight years. You will be expected to select
names of four such leaders and come out with 3000-word biographical sketch of the nature of their regime and
its ability to remain accountable to their people.

Research Fellow – Ideologies
The Fellow will be required to identify, research and write on emerging trends that tend to acquire an autonomy
that is typical of ideologies. Ideologies, as understood here, are those opposed to democracies or lack
accountability to peoples. You will be expected to write research papers of 3000-word each on four such themes
over a period of 12 months.

Research Fellow – Multiculturalism
The Fellow will be required to research on issues related to multiculturalism, as distinguishable from co-
existence and pluralism. Multiculturalism sows seeds of distrust between communities and undermines
pluralism and democratic existence. You will be expected to identify four issues and write four research papers of
3000-word each over a period of 12 months.

Research Fellow – Populism
The Fellow will examine what populism is and how it prevents people from arriving at a reasoned judgment. The
purpose of this fellowship is to help identify how popular sentiments prevent people and leaders from having an
objective view of ground realities and how people get divided on critical issues despite distressing facts on the
ground, e.g. situations of genocide. Over 12 months, you will identify and examine four issues and how people or
leaders failed to recognize what was obvious.

Research Fellow – Islamism
The Fellow will examine Islamism as an ideology, as distinguishable from religion, and how ideologies emerge
first in the minds of educated men and find acceptance into public consciousness. Your critical responsibility will
be to identify four case examples and come out with 3000-word research papers over a period of one year.

Research Fellow – Anti-Semitism
The Fellow will examine how the nature of Anti-Semitism is changing in contemporary times and who are its new
allies. The purpose here will also be to examine the standing of Israel as a critical pillar of the West. You will
select four specific cases of Anti-Semitic narrative, especially in the West, and come out with 3000-word research
papers over a period of 12 months.

The above guidelines are intended to help a prospective applicant to identify an area of his/her intellectual
engagement. These fellowships are unpaid, as of now, and are meant for young writers. If you would like to
discuss your suitability for the above fellowships, please write to us in 1000 words, suggesting a programme of
four research topics you would like to pursue. Please also send your resume and we will get back to you.
